Reading strategies
The reading strategies presented in this Guide provide an overview of reading at the post-secondary level.
Since the texts proposed at university, which are vehicles for the acquisition of knowledge, are dense and the various fields of study require the acquisition of vocabulary and concepts describing abstract representations, the use of reading strategies becomes essential for their comprehension and long-term learning. (Bertrand and Azrour, 2004; cited in Crépeau and Fleuret, 2017).
This Guide provides a classification and detailed description of reading comprehension strategies. For each of the strategies presented, you will find a definition, the advantages of using the strategy, steps to get started, examples, and suggested exercises to develop your sense of competence.
The classification of reading strategies presented herein was used as a tool in a study that aimed to describe the repertoire of reading strategies of Indigenous student in their first year of university1, as reported by them. This classification is inspired by Bégin 2008; El-Koumy 2004; Nist and Holschuch 2000.
We are grateful to the author, Nancy Crépeau, for writing this reading guide, which we hope will help students in their reading process, a pillar of learning and success in university studies.
